Artist’s Background

Carol Law graduated from Massachusetts College of art in Boston. She spent the following summer studying in Rome and the following year studied printmaking at the Museum school of Fine Arts also in Boston.

Carol developed a strong style in printmaking and applied this skill to woodburning where figures and images emerged from the grain of the wood as if they had spent infinite time waiting to appear.

It was later however, that Carol discovered her medium, and she has done her major work in batik. Batik is an ancient method of painting with wax on fabric which acts as a resist to dye. There are many layers of wax and dye before the work is completed.

Carol’s work has been shown in the north east in galleries and top craft fairs in New England and eastern New York. She received a special award for her batik at the Berkshire Craft Fair. Her work has been sold throughout the United States and abroad.

Nature and the seasons play a large role in Carol’s work, as well as fantasy, mythological, and primordial themes. The Berkshires of western Massachusetts where she lived were an inspiration until 1978 when she became Carol Law Conklin and she and her husband, Richard, established a Jersey cow dairy farm, (Amity Farm) In Hartford, near the Adirondack Mountains in eastern New York.

For the past twenty eight years the farm has provided new inspiration for her work. Carol is looking forward to sharing her batik with you.
